Summer is officially here, and there’s nothing better than soaking up the sunshine with your dog by your side. Whether you're heading to the coast for a sandy beach day, planning weekend hikes, or simply enjoying slow morning walks, this season is all about being outside, connecting with nature, and making joyful memories.
Here at DJANGO, we’ve been loving the beach vibes and warm-weather adventures. Our community is already out there — hiking trails, splashing in waves, and lounging in the sun — all while staying safe and stylish in their DJANGO gear.
To help you and your pup make the most of the season, here are a few thoughtful tips for safe and happy summer adventures.
Tips for Summer Dog Safety and Comfort
1. Know the Signs of Heat Stress ☀️
Dogs don’t sweat the way we do, and overheating can happen quickly in the summer sun.
Excessive panting, glazed eyes, or disorientation are early signs of overhearing. Keep outings short during peak heat and always offer shade and water.
Pro tip: Avoid outdoor play or long walks during the hottest part of the day (usually 11am–4pm). Early mornings and evenings are safer and much more comfortable for your dog (and you!).
2. Protect Sensitive Paws 🐾
Asphalt and sand can get dangerously hot. A quick test: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. Opt for morning or evening walks, and consider dog booties or grassy trails.
3. Hydrate Often, Even on Short Outings 💧
Bring a portable water bowl and offer frequent water breaks. A few sips every 15-20 minutes can make a big difference in your dog's comfort and energy.
4. Travel Smart 🎒
Whether it's a day hike or weekend getaway, keep your dog's travel essentials handy — leash, ID tag, poop bags, treats, and a supportive dog harness or pet carrier built for comfort and safety.
And when you're on the move, make sure to choose a structured pet carrier that supports your dog in a natural, horizontal position.
Riding safely on all fours — and not in an upright, vertical position — is always best for dogs' backs no matter what their breed, age, or health condition. Consider this modern dog carrier backpack and this waxed canvas dog tote bag for your pet friendly travels. Both are designed for comfort, functionaltiy, and the wellbeing and safety of your dog.
5. Be Aware of Beach Hazards 🌊
The beach is a summer favorite — but it comes with its own set of risks for dogs:
- Mind the tides and waves. Not all dogs are strong swimmers, and strong currents can be dangerous — especially for small breeds. Keep a close eye (and a leash) on your pup if they’re near the surf.
- Saltwater is not for drinking. Ingesting too much saltwater can lead to dehydration or salt poisoning. Always bring fresh water and offer it frequently.
- Watch for sharp shells or debris.Hot sand, broken shells, or buried trash can injure paw pads. Scan the area before playtime.
- Rinse off after. Sand and salt can irritate your dog’s skin or cause matting in long coats. Give your pup a rinse with fresh water after every beach visit.
6. Watch Out for Ticks, Fleas, and Tall Grass 🐜
More sunshine means more time outdoors — and more exposure to pests like ticks and fleas, especially in wooded areas, grassy fields, and along hiking trails. When it comes to ticks and fleas -
- Avoid tall, unmowed grass and dense brush. Stick to clear trails to reduce contact with ticks.
- Use a vet-approved flea and tick preventative consistently during the warm months. Topicals, collars, and chewables are all great options depending on your dog’s needs.
- Do a post-adventure check. After each outing, inspect your dog’s ears, underarms, belly, tail base, and between their toes for hitchhiking pests.
- Don’t forget yourself! Ticks love humans, too. It’s a good habit to check your clothes and skin when you get back inside.=
